GAS GIANT

There's only one way to describe Jacob Hashimoto's installation. Jaw-dropping. Gas Giant (above) is created using 10,000 hand-painted bamboo paper kites, a feat all on their own, which when arranged form an immersive environment recalling the artist's childhood. We're simply astounded. If you needed another reason to visit Venice, this is it. Read more at DesignBoom.

VENICE BIENNALE: PART ONE

We can see a link — collecting and an interest in history — between Simryn Gill and Lara Almarcegui, Simryn's Spanish counterpart in this years Venice Biennale. Lara investigates urban transformation with an interest in modern ruins and urban wastelands, but the result of her collecting sways to the monumental. We're in a state of amazement by the overwhelming mounds of rubble, and wonder whether we should be booking a trip to Venice soon. Via DesignBoom.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Dutch photographer Erik Klein Wolterink takes organisation to new limits in his new book Kitchen Portraits. We're utterly astonished by his process which involves shooting each cabinet, appliance and drawers individually only to restitch them into life-size photo composites revealing all that lurks behind closed doors. Committed. Via Trendland.

FABULOUS FREAK OF NATURE

We've mentioned butterflies before and never cease to be amazed at their ability to inspire even in the most common garden varieties. Now we're truly stunned by the beauty of this rare creature, the Great Mormon butterfly. This gynandromorph, half male/half female, has both laypersons and lepidopterists in a flap; it's super rare, a real one in a million. Wow! Image: Martin Williams via South China Morning Post.
